RESIDENCIES

GIVE YOUR STUDENTS AN EXTENDED INTERACTION WITH ALLEY TEACHING ARTISTS.

In an Alley Theatre residency, our teaching artists make multiple visits to your classroom or after-school program.  Over the course of several weeks or even a full year, students explore the world of theatre, learning about storytelling, acting, design and performance.  Or use theatrical skills and techniques to explore other subjects – including literacy, history, or science.  All of our residencies are tailored to meet the needs of your student body.  We can start with one of the programs described below or collaborate with you on a new curriculum to approach your subject material in a whole new way.

          Dramakids

          After-school   Upper Elementary

DramaKids is a creative dramatics program in which students explore ensemble storytelling through games, exercises, and the creation and performance of an original show.  Students gain confidence in expressing themselves, learn to work as an ensemble, increase their understanding and appreciation of theatre, and develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as they collaborate to create and perform their own work of art.
Students meet with Alley Teaching Artists once a week for at least 8 weeks.  Bilingual Teaching Artists are available.
This residency occurs on your campus, so a site visit is required before final arrangements are made.  The cost of this residency is between $80 and $100 per session.  The cost is determined by the number of participants and the number of sessions.

          From Stage to Page

          In-school    Upper-Elementary

From Stage to Page focuses on using theatre games and techniques to increase excitement about reading and to improve literacy and comprehension.  The Alley Theatre teaching artist will lead activities based on a book of the classroom teacher’s choice. The students explore central themes found in the literature through improvisation, role-play, and text analysis. These sessions can serve as an introduction to a text your class is about to read or be the culmination of your study unit – or both!
This residency occurs on your campus, so a site visit is required before final arrangements are made.  The cost of this residency is between $80 and $100 per session.  The cost is determined by the number of participants and the number of session.

          Playwriting 360°

          In-school     High School

Playwriting  360° introduces high school students to dramatic writing as a creative outlet.  Students learn about dramatic structure and write their own 10-minute plays under the guidance of an Alley Teaching Artist.  As a class, the young playwrights learn how plays are developed and improved through readings and workshops and how dramaturgs, directors and actors influence the growth of a play.  The plays produced in Playwriting 360° residencies are automatically considered for our HYPE summer program.
Playwriting 360° can fit into any English, Creative Writing, or Theatre curriculum.  It involves 5-6 Teaching Artist visits and the 10-minute play constitutes a major writing assignment.  This residency occurs on your campus, so a site visit is required before final arrangements are made.  The cost for this residency is $500 per school.

For more information on any of these residencies or to develop an original residency program for your students, contact Rob Kimbro School Programs Manager at 713-315-5439.
