Becoming an Alley Theatre partner provides teachers with a valuable outside resource that engages students in thinking and writing in a very personal and powerful way. School partnerships involve participation in multiple programs and a working relationship between the school and the theatre. Together the school and the theatre design an arts education experience to suit student needs and meet teacher goals. Students and educators participate in observing plays. They discuss the plays, playmaking, theatre design and production with guest teaching artists and with each other. Eventually students will create theatre that speaks with the power of their own voices. Since theatre is an interactive community of artists and audiences, participating in it as a maker or observer teaches collaboration and teamwork. We teach ensemble. We teach that playwriting is the process of developing active language to explore character and conflict. We teach that acting is action and reaction. We teach that the elements of design and production support the play’s action and characters. At the Alley Theatre, we relate to language, ideas, expression, and society the way a zoo associates with biology, ecology, and nature. We are a practical resource for teaching English, writing, literature, the humanities, social studies and the fine arts.
