Set in fictional Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s, To Kill a Mockingbird is the coming of age story of Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, the daughter of Atticus, a lawyer who, despite threats to himself and his family, defends a black man accused of assaulting a white woman. The narrator of the story, a grown-up Scout, looks back at her childhood, delivering a powerful message about prejudice, injustice, and humanity.
Published in 1960, the novel To Kill a Mockingbird became a bestseller, selling over five million copies in thirteen countries and winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 1999, it was voted “Best Novel of the Century” by the Library Journal. In 1962, the film version of To Kill a Mockingbird went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay Adaptation to Horton Foote (Alley’s Trip to Bountiful, Young Man from Atlanta, and The Carpetbagger’s Children). With the printing of the 40th edition, over 30 million copies have been sold.
To Kill a Mockingbird features a cast that includes the return of Alley Company Actor John Feltch, in the role of Atticus Finch. To listen to the interview on KUHF with John Feltch, click here.
