Sandy Rustin

Sandy Rustin is an actress and award-winning playwright named to the Broadway Women’s Fund’s “Women to Watch” list. Her adaptation of the film Clue (the most produced U.S. play for the 3rd year in a row) made its East Coast premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse where The New York Times called it “a welcome throwback to an era of physical comedy!” The play is currently touring in the UK (Cluedo). Sandy’s comedy, The Cottage (“Laugh Out Loud!” – The New York Times), was presented by MTC with Jason Alexander (“Seinfeld”) directing and is in development for Broadway. Her adaptation of MGM’s Mystic Pizza premiered at Ogunquit Playhouse and will start its life of licensing in the summer of 2022. Sandy partnered with Disney to premiere: Jolly Holiday with Disney on Broadway - at Paper Mill Playhouse in ‘21/’22. Sandy wrote book & lyrics for Mattel’s American Girl Live (U.S. tour). With Sarah Saltzberg, Sandy gave a “thorough feminist scouring” (The New York Times) to Rogers & Hart’s I Married an Angel, adapted for NYC’s City Center’s Encores! Her play, Everything Seems Like Maybe, is licensed by Playscripts and her play, The Suffragist’s Murder, was commissioned for FST’s The Suffragist Project. Her sketch comedy musical, Rated P … For Parenthood (“Wistfully Funny!” – The New York Times), opened Off-Broadway at the Westside Theatre and was optioned by ABC Studios. Her play, Struck (“A Charming Comedy!” – The New York Times), enjoyed acclaimed productions at NJ REP & Theatre Raleigh. Her play, Houston, received the New American Musical Award and her comedy, Elijah, was named amongst the Jewish Plays Project “Top Plays of 2020.” Sandy’s film, Sifu, a coming of middle-age dramedy, begins production in ‘22/’23, with award-winning director, Jason Chaet, starring Jason Alexander (“Seinfeld”) & Armando Riesco (“The Chi”), produced by Hirsch Giovanni Entertainment. With FST’s Playwright Collective, Sandy developed a Masterclass: Writing Comedy for the Stage, which she teaches to students all over the globe (thank you, Zoom). Sandy is the Founding Co-Artistic Director of Midtown Direct Rep. With her family, she created the Jerry Kraut Memorial Fund, supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Chicago.
