Alley Theatre’s Education and Community Engagement department, in partnership with The Telling Project, used our First Draft personal narrative writing program to help veterans find, write, and tell their stories. First Draft utilizes a mix of personal narrative and creative non-fiction techniques to help individuals write a story. We assembled a group of seven veterans who participated in a four-week writing workshop. Each presented their story at two events throughout the city of Houston in events called “The Houston Veterans’ Story Hour.”

These stories are an important piece of the tapestry of life, and it is important for civilians to hear what veterans have to say. While one of the results of a program such as our Houston Veterans’ Story Hour can be cathartic and therapeutic for the veterans, it is more important that we embrace their community as a part of ours.

Tremendous thanks to the MetLife Foundation and Theatre Communications Group for funding this project through the Blue Star Theatres Grant Program.
