Sample bequest language for a will or codicil

You can tailor your bequest to meet your needs and wishes by selecting a particular bequest form. Some examples include:

1. A GENERAL BEQUEST is for a certain dollar amount of property, usually cash: "I give the Alley Theatre (Houston, Texas 77002), the sum of $___."

2. A SPECIFIC BEQUEST directs that the Alley Theatre is to receive a specific piece of property, such as securities: "I give to the Alley Theatre (Houston, Texas 77002), ___ shares of ___ stock."

3. A RESIDUAL BEQUEST designates all or a portion of whatever remains after debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been paid: "I give to the Alley Theatre (Houston, Texas 77002), ___ percent of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate."

4. A CONTINGENT BEQUEST takes effect only under certain conditions: "In the event my spouse does not survive me, I give to the Alley Theatre (Houston, Texas 77002) the sum of $___."

You can further choose the designation of your gift by adding, "to benefit the Alley Theatre endowment."
