El Zocalo

Inspired by the traditional meeting places found all over Latin America, Alley Theatre’s metaphoric “El Zócalo” is a place-making initiative to celebrate, grow, and interact with Houston’s diverse Latin culture and artistic community. Alley Theatre is proud to join together with well-established cultural and social organizations and Houston-area schools to foster community and reinforce Houston’s presence as a diverse arts center that serves every neighborhood in its community.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

El Zócalo (EZ) – Spanish for “town square,” is the Alley Theatre’s cornerstone community engagement program.

El Zócalo was created to fill a void by creating Hispanic programming inspired by Houston’s rich Hispanic legacies. The Theatre is creating and maintaining collaborative opportunities for Hispanic artists and community members to share their stories, explore their heritage, and form meaningful connections that bridge the class and cultural divide that often exists between separate “neighborhoods.”

Since 2017, El Zócalo has seen immense growth and impact. The Alley is committed to the following long-range action steps:

Alley Theatre launched El Zócalo in 2017 with the visiting production of Misa Fronteriza from Monterey, Mexico, and the establishment of the El Zócalo Advisory Team. With the goal of nurturing long-term relationships with community members at multiple engagement levels, this important commitment by the Alley has already seen immense growth and impact, including:

EL ZÓCALO ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The El Zócalo Advisory Committee is vital in connecting Alley Theatre to Houston’s diverse Hispanic community. With over 100 members from various Hispanic organizations, it fosters equitable arts experiences, ensures authentic representation on stage, and strengthens relationships through partnerships. Prioritizing inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, it empowers the Hispanic community to engage fully in Houston’s vibrant arts scene.
