Alley Theatre is honored to be a recipient of the inaugural Doris Duke Foundation Performing Arts Technologies Lab Grant, which was awarded in 2024!  With the support of the grant, Alley Theatre developed new methods of artistic collaboration using Virtual and Augmented Reality technology.

Simulated Environment for Theatrical Staging (S.E.T.S.) will enable artists and technicians to visualize scenic elements in the performance space remotely or in person, allowing collaborators to make important decisions that affect the design, safety, and budget of the show before fabrication begins.

We hope this research and development will fuel new forms of collaboration in a world of remote interactions, and new paradigms for our industry that embrace smart decision making and respect the time and wellbeing of all those involved in the creative process.

As part of this initiative, the Doris Duke Foundation partnered with the Alley to develop this 3D model of the Hubbard Theatre, including our backstage area and trap room. Take a look at it yourself!

The mission of the Doris Duke Foundation is to build a more creative, equitable and sustainable future. We work across three areas: Arts & Culture; Nature; and Health & Well-being. To learn more, visit www.dorisduke.org
