FRAGILE DREAMS, FADED REALITIES

February 21 – March 16

HUBBARD THEATRE

By Tennessee Williams
Directed by Rob Melrose

Williams’ American classic follows a family caught by dreams and delusion. Amanda, a faded Southern belle, yearns for a better life for her children. Her daughter Laura, however, would rather spend time alone with her collection of delicate glass animals, while her restless son, Tom, longs to escape the monotony of his current life. This memory play asks us to explore the delicate nature of human connections.

Thornton Wilder’s THE EMPORIUM Playwright’s Reflections

I still marvel at Our Town, a play my parents think of as a well-made story, and I study for its formal innovation. How does Thornton Wilder do both at once? In order to find out I decided to read everything by Thornton Wilder. I read all his plays and novels. I read biographies and letters. And at the very end I was working my way through his journals when I came across notes about an unfinished play: The Emporium.Continue reading

Thornton Wilder: A Giant of the American Stage

Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) is a towering figure in American theatre. A playwright and novelist, Wilder’s work explored universal human themes like love, family, purpose, and the passage of time. Although his thematic focus was broad, Wilder developed a distinctive storytelling approach that continues to resonate with audiences today.Continue reading

Finding Herself: Why Jane Eyre is More Than Just a Love Story

Jane Eyre is widely recognized as one of the greatest romance novels ever written. Since the time of its publication it has entered mainstream media, quickly becoming one of the most frequently adapted novels of all time. In the vast majority of adaptations, the emphasis is placed on the fraught courtship of Jane by her employer, Edward Fairfax Rochester. Although this is arguably the central relationship in the novel, it’s interesting to note that it only encompasses about half of the actual text.Continue reading

A CELEBRATION OF ADAPTATION: A RETROSPECTIVE OF LITERARY CLASSICS ON STAGE

Alley Theatre is no stranger to breathing new life into classic literature. From the heartwarming A Christmas Carol to the chilling whodunit of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, the Alley has a rich history of transforming beloved stories from the page to the stage. Our latest production, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, exemplifies this love. But why revisit these well-worn tales? Can’t we simply pick up the book and delve into the world Brontë crafted?Continue reading
